Abstract: This study examines phenomenological understanding as a methodological alternative to positivist explanation in the social sciences, adopting a comparative epistemological approach. Classical positivism—in its Durkheimian, Weberian, and Marxist variants—sought to subject social phenomena to the logic of natural causality and presumed neutrality. Against this backdrop, the study asks whether phenomenology can reconstruct the object of sociology on a different epistemological basis, one that recognizes the intentional and meaningful character of social action, thereby overcoming the limits of the positivist paradigm.
The analysis proceeds along two complementary lines. The first traces the philosophical shift from “explanation” (Erklären) to “understanding” (Verstehen), revisiting Husserl’s foundational concepts of intentional consciousness and the epoché (phenomenological reduction) as methodological conditions for grasping social reality. The second examines Alfred Schutz’s phenomenology of the social world, focusing on the lifeworld (Lebenswelt), intersubjectivity, and the typification of action and language as mechanisms through which actors construct shared social reality.
Three main conclusions emerge. First, the social phenomenon differs ontologically from the natural phenomenon, constituting a fabric of intentional meanings rather than a neutral external fact. Second, sociological knowledge is a second-order construct, interpreting interpretations already made by social actors themselves. Third, phenomenology offers deeper explanatory power than positivism by penetrating the semantic structure of social action rather than merely describing its observable manifestations.
The study recommends integrating phenomenological approaches into contemporary field research and employing qualitative tools—such as conversation analysis and linguistic analysis—to deepen understanding of everyday social interaction.
Keywords: phenomenological understanding; social sciences; lived experience; intersubjectivity; intentionality.
